2010 Art Contest Rules

 Rules and Important Information
  • All artwork must be glorifying to God.

  • All artwork must be done by student in the

  •                   current school year (2009-2010).

  • Artwork must conform to the specifications

  •            for the category in which it is entered.

  • Artwork must be matted. Senior categories

  •            may be matted or framed.

     

    Matting Instructions

    Most projects are on 8.5 x 11 inch materials. These items should be matted with an 8 x 10 inch opening. Larger sizes will need larger openings in the matting. Check each category for the size instructions. The size will very from project to project. Please plan for this before you begin your project to insure that what you wish to be viewed is seen clearly after matting.

     

    Projects subject to smearing should be sealed with protective spray.

     

    Mounting Instructions

    All entries should be matted and attached to foam board or poster board. Cover the entire project in a clear art plastic covering.

     

    Entry Form

    Please attach your entry form to the front of a 9 x 12 inch manila envelope.

     

    This envelope should be attached to the back of your project after it is covered in plastic. The envelope is used for your project summary (see below), judge’s comments, etc. Do not fold envelope.

     

    Project Summary

    With each entry, include a 3 inch x 5 inch or 4 inch x 6 inch lined index card. Place your name at the top of the card and include a summary which answers the following questions:

  • Why did you choose the character or subject?

  • What material did you use?

  • Have you taken art classes, received formal training, or done any research that helped you with this project?

  • What help did you receive from other people (friends, parents, teacher) in planning the piece? While working on the piece?

  • Please copy these questions and answer them in complete sentences. Place this summary in your manila envelope.

  • Some projects have other questions that need to be answered. Check the instructions for your category.

    Mailing Instructions

    Mail your entry in a protected box or envelope. Mail to IAHE, P.O. Box 530, New Palestine, IN 46163. Please note: The IAHE cannot be responsible for any damages done to the project during shipping.

     

    Please write the total amount for one family in one check. Entries from one family may be mailed together and do not need to be packaged separately.

     

    Entry Deadlines

    All entries must be postmarked by January 8, 2010. You will receive a letter after the judging with a list of the winners in each category.

     

    Judging

    Judging will take place after January 15, 2010 and before February 7, 2010. Winners will be notified in writing by February 10, 2010.

     

    Winners

    There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners and honorable mention in each category where quantity allows.

    All entries will be displayed at the Annual IAHE Convention February 26 and 27, 2010.

    The Art Contest will be a part of the festivities of the IAHE Annual Convention.

    Contestants need not be registered for the convention to enter the contest.

    The IAHE reserves the right not to display artwork judged to be in poor taste.

     

    Please Note: Projects may be claimed on Saturday, February 27, after 4:30 p.m. at the Convention.

    You will need to show your confirmation letter to pick up your artwork. You may give a friend your confirmation letter and ask them to do this for you. You may also make arrangements to pick up your entry at the IAHE office by appointment only after March 3, 2010.

     

    Important Information

    The Indiana Homeschool Convention is early in the year. Please note this when planning projects. Our Convention is February 26 and 27, 2010. Completing projects before Christmas time will help the student have them ready to mail for the early deadline date of January 8, 2010.

     

    Categories: 

    "Remembering the God of Yesterday and Today”

    Please see matting instructions prior to beginning each project.

     

    Kindergarten thru 3rd Categories:

    1. Draw a Dinosaur: The dinosaur should be placed in a setting. This may be done with black pen or pencil and color using any medium on 8.5 x 11 inch paper.

    2. Design a kite: Using an 8.5 x 11 inch cardstock, turn it on the diagonal to form a diamond shape. Paper can be cut to make a diamond shape. Your kite should be decorated with something that flies. Make sure you add a tail. You may use any medium. Do not mount.

    3. Paint a Water Scene with Boats: Paint a picture of a water scene that includes boats using as much color as possible. Paint on 8.5 x 11 inch paper. Color with poster paint, watercolors, or pastels.

    4. Draw a Still Life that Includes a Vase of Flowers: Draw a scene using colored pencils or markers on 8.5 x 11 inch paper.

    5. Design a Collage of Animals: The design should be no larger than 11 x 13 inches. The collage should be made by cutting pictures out of magazines to make your picture. Finish the project with collage paste or sealer. Amount of color will be considered.

     

    4th thru 7th Categories:

    1. Design a Collage of Flowers: This collage should be made in the order of the color wheel. Apply your collage to cardboard no larger than 11 x 13 inches. You may use decoupage. Cover the project with clear plastic.

    2. Four Design Studies of Barns: Use four different mediums and four different barns for this project. Finished size should be no larger than 11 x 13 inches.

    3. Photograph a Still Life: Photograph a Still Life made up of memories from your life. On your 3 x 5 inch card, tell why each object in the photo is important to you. Minimum size of photo is 5 x 7 inches. Maximum size of photo is 8 x 10 inches. Photo may be developed by commercial labs or by the student. You must include your negative or digital thumbnail in your 9 x 12 inch manila envelope.

    4. Paint a Picture for a Calendar: Pick a month and paint a scene depicting that month. Painting should be 8.5 x 11 inches. Include the month used for your picture on your 3 x 5 inch card. Use any type of paint. This picture should be horizontal on the paper.

    5. Sculpt a Dinosaur: Using polymer clay such as Sculpey Clay, sculpt a dinosaur in its environment. Sculpture should be no larger than 4 x 6 inches.

    6. Draw a Historical Building: Draw a historical building with its surroundings. Draw in pencil or charcoal on 8.5 x 11 inch paper. Name the building and where it is located on your 3 x 5 inch card.

    7. Quilting: Design a quilt block that has an early childhood toy theme. The quilt block may be sewn by hand or machine. The finished quilt block should be no longer than 12 x 12 inches. It will be judged on creativity, color, design and neatness.

     

    8th thru 12th Categories:

    1. Copy the Masters (Classical paintings of Rembrandt, etc.): You may use any medium in this project. Artwork must be no larger than 18 x 24 inches. Each entry must enclose a print of the master being copied. The copy should be in the same medium as the original work.

    2. Four Design Studies of Hands: Using your four favorite mediums; draw four different hands on 11 x 13 inch paper, trying to capture God’s glory in His Creation. Show hands in an edifying position or activity.

    3. Draw a Historical Building: Draw a Historical building with pen and black ink. Drawing should be on 8.5 x 11 inch paper. Name the building and where it is located on your 3 x 5 inch card.

    4. Photograph a Scene of People in Action: Photograph a person or persons that are showing some kind of activity. Minimum size of photo is 5 x 7 inches. Maximum size of photo is 8 x 10 inches. Photo may be developed by commercial labs or by the student. You must include your negative or digital thumbnail in your 9 x 12 inch manila envelope.

    5. Draw a Portrait: Draw a portrait of someone using colored pencils on 8.5 x 11 inch paper. Tell on your 3 x 5 inch card who the person is and why you drew him/her.

    6. Draw an Animal: Using pastels, draw your favorite animal. Place the animal in a scene. Picture should be on 8.5 x 11 inch paper.

    7. Wood Carving: Carve a three dimensional animal no larger than 12 x 12 inches. The carving may be just the animal or the animal in a scene.

    8. Portfolio: Submit 4 complete works in 4 mediums chosen from any of the following: pen and ink, charcoal, pencil, watercolor, oil, acrylic, tempera, pastels, etc.
