2010 IAHE Spelling Bee By: IAHE 2010 Spelling Bee Information
The IAHE is sponsoring the annual State Spelling Bee, which will be held at the 25th Annual State Convention on Saturday, February 27, 2010. There will be two groups of competition: one for students 8-11 years of age, and one for students who are 12-14 years of age. Each participant must qualify for the State Bee by winning a Support Group Bee and a Regional Bee. The IAHE is not affiliated with the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. Deadlines Registration: November 13, 2009 Support Group Bee: December 22, 2009 Regional Bee: January 22, 2010 State Bee: February 27, 2010 Please note the earlier dates. These dates are necessary because of the early convention this year. This will allow time for the office to process all information to get ready for the State Bee. Eligibility Age Requirements: 8-11: 11 year olds must be 11 on February 27, 2010 12-14: 14 year olds must be l4 on February 27, 2010 Win a Local Bee Win a Regional Bee Please note:• Participants must remain in one age group. • Those who have won the State Bee cannot compete in that same age group a second year. If a contestant has chosen to participate in the older age group in past years, he/she may not compete in the younger age group, even though they may still meet the age requirements of that younger group. Procedure Support Group Bee: This can be oral, written or both.
Regional Bee: Same as above.
State Bee: The State Bee will be an individual oral bee of approximately six words for two rounds in semifinal competition. Finalists will be chosen to compete in a continuous oral spelldown as outlined in rules found on sheets sent to contestants. Awards Support Group Bee: All participants will receive a certificate. The winner of each age group will receive a special certificate and a blue ribbon. Each age group winner will qualify to participate in the Regional Bee.
Regional Bee: Winners will receive a trophy and qualify for the State Bee. Winners will also receive a voucher for a discount of $20 toward admission to the 25th Annual Convention.
Please note: Family and friends do not have to be registered for the convention to attend the State Spelling Bee. However, they must be registered for the Convention if they do wish to attend the workshops or visit the Vendor Hall. State Bee: All participants will receive a medallion. Winners of the Bee will each receive a plaque and a cash prize. Fees At the local level, there is a $3.00 registration fee per student to help the IAHE defray expenses for mailing, printing, awards, etc. This fee is payable by the support group at the time the group registers to hold a Bee. There are no additional fees for participation in the Regional or the State Bee. These fees must be sent to the IAHE Office by November 13, 2009. The Office will then send the Spelling Bee Packet to the Bee organizer. Please address all registrations to the attention of Marilyn Durnell ResponsibilitiesSupport Group Coordinators: 1. Schedule local Bee. 2. Register spellers and mail the list of participants and fees to the IAHE (see official form at www.inhomeducators.org). 3. Hold the Bee: Words may be your choice, using dictionary, practice book, previous spelling lists, etc. 4. Officials needed: one pronouncer and two judges. 5. Provide information about the winners of the support group to the Regional Representatives by January 3, 2010. 6. Award the certificates and ribbons to the winners.
Regional Bee Coordinators: The coordinator is an IAHE Regional Representative or one appointed by the Regional Representative. 1. Schedule Regional Bee. 2. Hold the Bee: Words may be your choice, using dictionary, practice book, previous spelling lists, etc. 3. Officials needed: one pronouncer and two judges. 4. Provide information and entry forms for the State Bee to the winners. 5. Award trophies and vouchers to the winners. 6. Complete State Entry Forms and send them to the IAHE Office by January 29, 2010.
